judgement is not fully formed and
their intensity is potent.
Reducing suicidal behaviour over
the long term involves improving the
health of the family and the larger society
in which families live. Some factors,
such as losing a boyfriend or girlfriend,
are very individual; others, such as
parental separation or alcoholism,
point to our imperfect social fabric.
Refusing Treatment
Adults are often painfully aware of
their child’s depression before the child
is prepared to admit it. Children may
not be able to describe their emotional
events and will, therefore, react to their
feelings rather than reflect on them.
Cooperating with treatment
means admitting there is something
wrong. This admission is frightening
and is particularly difficult for adolescents,
who are young, healthy, and full
of potential. Any flaw (acne, body
weight, hair) is cause for agonizing
appraisal; a flaw in brain functioning
can seem too much to bear.
Teenagers can be especially wary

of using antidepressants. They need a
lot of clear information about side
effects. They often ask about addiction
potential — “Will I need to take it the
rest of my life?” — and they believe
that they should be able to get over the
depression on their own. It will take an
inordinate amount of willpower to
overcome depression. They will need
to expand their ability to deal with
stress through exercise, music, and
relaxation techniques.
When dealing with a child who has
depression, it is important to stress the
common goals of better health, never
giving up, open communication, and
the need to assess what is working and
what is not working.
