Detecting Young Misery

Parents and teachers may be one of the most important links in detecting behaviours leading
to childhood depression — behaviours that could lead to early warning signs of suicide.
One in 10 youths in Canada experience some form of depression and even suicidal
tendencies. Researchers who have studied this now realize that early and correct diagnosis
is the key to helping young people live better lives.
Ironically, parents are not always the first to see this. Health care professionals — RNs,
RNAs, and RNPs — and teachers are an invaluable early warning system for serious mental
health problems. Because they are on the frontline of patient care, they are frequently in
contact with parents in a more informal way. As such, they play a vital role in helping other
professionals in the care continuum provide assistance when it is needed most.
