But to match a big, hearty, meaty casserole, you need a
big, hearty wine. Almost every wine region in the world has
some great offerings, including Ontario. From France,
check out some of the great value red wines from Minervois
or Corbières in the southwest, a nice Merlot-based
Bordeaux from St Emilion or a wine from the Rhône, north
or south.
The Spanish section of the LCBO is an excellent place
to find super value red wines. Spain, with its warm climate,
has much to offer as a complement to winter fare. The very
popular Gran Coronas from Spain’s largest producer,
Torres, is delicious a great value and a wonderful way to sip
your way through winter. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon
and Tempranillo, it’s a fireside wine, crowd-pleaser and very
food-friendly. The regions of Rioja, Toro and Valdepeñas
also supply many delicious wines. From Portugal, check out
the regions of Dão, Alentejo and Douro for affordable, soft,
rich red wines.
If there’s roast beef in the oven, think about serving a
nice Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine. A fine mature
Bordeaux would be just the ticket. Yet, you need look no
further than Ontario for a superb award-winning
Bordeaux blend in Trius Red, available in the LCBO.
Another terrific wine that pairs wonderfully with roast
lamb, sausages and grilled veggies is Pillitteri Cabernet
Franc. The 2002 is available direct from the winery and, if
you buy a case, it will be delivered promptly to your door
for about $12.
