“fours fours” with teammates Brian McCartney (Cornwall),
Ron Wood (Cornwall) and Gerry LaPorte (Nepean).
“People often look at this as a senior’s sport,” says
David. “But many clubs have players in their 20s. Anyone
can play, and we welcome all ages.”
A qualified coach and umpire, David is a mentor to
many players in Galetta, enthusiastically sharing his knowledge
with new recruits. David and his wife, Sandra, also an
accomplished bowler and a district champion many times
over, say they enjoy the competition and social opportunities
the game presents.
All decked out in crisp white clothing, local players
hone their craft at clubs in Ottawa, Deep River, Smiths Fall,
Prescott, Almonte, Goulbourn, Nepean and Brockville (see
sidebar for contact information).
According to the Ontario Lawn Bowling Association,
this province has the largest population of lawn bowlers in
Canada, boasting more than 10,500 bowlers in 165 clubs.
THE HISTORY BEHIND THE GAME
Historians speculate that lawn bowling has its origins
in France or in a game played by Roman soldiers where a
stone was tossed towards a target stone. During Queen
Victoria’s reign many greens, both public and private,
were created. Lawn bowling became very popular with all
classes in Victorian and Edwardian times and “to be a

In 1876, an American travelling abroad to Scotland discovered
the sport and upon his return introduced it in the
United States. With the help of textile workers who arrived
from England, its popularity quickly spread.
THE ROOTS OF THE GALETTA CLUB
The Galetta Lawn Bowling Club was the creation of
local resident (now deceased) Donald MacHardy. A farmer
with Scottish roots, MacHardy discovered the game while
on a trip to his motherland. When he returned home, he
began telling his neighbours about the game.
