Stittsville

In fact, today Metkin Akgun is president
of the Stittsville Village
Association and he’s a proud and enthusiastic
supporter of the community. For
years he was active in a smaller local
homeowners’ association and then
became one of the directors of the SVA.
In 2007, he became president of the
volunteer organization that advocates
for the community in dealing with the
City of Ottawa, organizes village events
and provides information to residents
on local issues.
One issue lots of Stittsville residents
are talking about is the construction
plan at the Goulbourn Recreation
Complex (GRC). Located at 1500 Shea
Road, at the corner of Shea Road and
Abbott Street, the popular landmark is a
bustling community centre. A multipurpose
facility, it offers a wide variety of
services and amenities including a sixlane
pool, a water slide, a play pool for
the little kiddies and a hydro-massage
pool. There’s also an NHL sized ice pad
that can be made available for sledge
hockey. All kinds of recreation programs
are offered, including aquafitness and
swimming lessons.
And just like the rest of the community,
the GRC is growing too. An
expansion project is underway at the
complex and it’s scheduled to be completed
by the end of September 2008.
Once it’s all done, the facility will also
be home to a gym, weight room, community
hall and several meeting rooms.
People in the village are also looking
forward to a number of community
events and attractions, including Art-inthe-Park,
Canada Day festivities on July 1,
Villagefest in October, the Parade of
Lights in December and Winterfest in
February.
Held annually on the grounds of the
GRC, Canada Day festivities start about
3 p.m. and include everything from live
entertainment, kids’ activities, a film and
a band to fireworks after dark. People are
encouraged to bring lawnchairs and the
fixings for a picnic and enjoy all the fun.
Villagefest, slated for Saturday,
October 4, is another highlight on the
social calendar in Stittsville. Activities
start in the morning and are centered
around Village Square, at the corner of
Abbott Street and Stittsville Main
Street. Highlights include a soapbox
derby on Abbott Street, a small parade,
plus lots of entertainment and activities.
