Stittsville has come
a long way, baby!
My, how times have changed. One
hundred and eighty-odd years ago,
Stittsville wasn’t much more than a fork
in the road. Settlement originally started
at the corner of Hazeldean Road and Carp
Road and the first settlers were farmers,
immigrants and soldiers who decided to
stay put in these parts after the War of
1812. The village was named after
Jackson Stitt, an Irish immigrant who
served as the local postmaster.
But community life here got off to a
shaky start. Most of the wee village went
up in smoke, because of a huge fire in
1870. It burned for days and the blaze tore
through most of Carleton County. When
the flames were finally doused, the corner
of the world that had been the new
Stittsville had been practically gutted.
Around the same time, a railroad line
was being built right through the area to
connect Ottawa to Carleton Place. As a

intersection of what is now Main and
Abbott Streets, where a few businesses –
including a train station – had been
established.

redefined what is now the centre

Growth was modest in the early
years, with the population numbering in
the dozens then hundreds. At the dawn of
the 20th century, there were only a couple
of hundred people here and even by
the 1950s, Stittsville’s numbers didn’t go

much over 500.
Then, look out!
Along came the swinging 60s, the
disco 70s, the yuppies 80s, the internet
90s and the marvelous new millennium.
Regional growth shot through the roof.
The local high-tech industry boomed.
Both roads and transit improved.Area set-
tlement spread out in all directions.
Points on the map that were once considered
the hinterlands were no longer
remote, as services and amenities multiplied
and reallocated to serve the burgeoning
populace.
