B USINESS S ENSE
Ottawa audiences love Orpheus shows. Whatever production
is next on the calendar -- Thoroughly Modern Millie, The
Sound of Music, Fame, Nunsense the Mega Musical or The Full Monty –
you always know it’ll be musical theatre at its best.
A beloved local institution since 1906, Orpheus
Musical Theatre Society is committed to providing quality
musical theatre for the community by the community.
Entirely volunteer driven, this non-profit organization has
grown over the decades, under different names, and today
Orpheus stages three musical shows per season, featuring
top local performers and a professional orchestra. Last year
Orpheus celebrated its 100th anniversary as the longest
running musical theatre society in North America and the
next 100 years won't disappoint!
This season, Thoroughly Modern Millie is slated for March
7-15 and The Sound of Music is on stage June 6-14. All shows
are performed at Centrepointe Theatre and they’re cast
from open auditions.
Orpheus House, the society’s home base at 17
Fairmont Avenue, is used for rehearsals, set and costume
construction. Anyone wishing to audition or to get involved
is welcome. There’s also the Orpheus Choral Group, a
mixed choir.
Consistent, solid and entertaining shows are presented
each year and there’s a rigorous screening process to

select the productions. Fame, Nunsense the Mega Musical and The
Full Monty are already in the works for 2008-09, ensuring a
great season to come.
But it wouldn’t happen without Orpheus’ valued
patrons and volunteers. From set painters and costume
sewers to the team members who design and sell advertising
for the program, there are as many behind-the-scenes volunteers
contributing to Orpheus’ success as those on stage.
Every role is important and the door’s always open for new
members.
In addition to entertaining the community, Orpheus
has earned a reputation for giving back to the community.
Performances in retirement homes and donations of proceeds
and tickets are some of its goodwill efforts.
Community support is always welcome. Orpheus has
enjoyed a successful communication partnership with the
Jewel Radio station and your support is also appreciated.
Orpheus Angels provide donations that ensure this century-old
organization will continue to thrive. Check
