How it all began
Canada’s conservation
movement began in 1904 when
Jack Miner founded the Jack
Miner Bird Sanctuary in
Kingsville, Ontario. Other conservationists
emerged to promote
wildlife conservation and
the need to establish sanctuaries
and wildlife refuges.
Migratory birds were banded
and restrictions were placed
on hunting. Dubbed “the Father
of Conservation,” Jack Miner’s
influence was felt so strongly
nationwide that, after his death
in 1944, the Parliament of
Canada unanimously passed an
act to honour Jack Miner each
year in April.
