have no shelter or who need warmth. A 120-centimetre
by 160-centimetre (47-inch by 63-inch) blanket requires
48 20-centimetre by 20-centimetre (8-inch by 8-inch)
squares. Alternatively, some knitters save on sewing by
knitting strips 160 centimetres (63 inches) long.
Knitters can drop off their finished items at any of the
three Michael’s stores in Ottawa.
For those who want to be creative while learning
from others, Fiona and fellow knitter Carol Stewart offer
fibre arts classes on Fridays at the Parsifal Waldorf
School, located on Wilbrod Street in Sandy Hill. They
modelled their “It Takes a Village to Knit a Farm” class
after a knitting cooperative they read about in an issue
of Living Crafts.
One of the class’s recent creations is a farm play
mat. Using fuzzy wool, each knitter designed and knitted
a “field.” Once sewn together, the finished mat is
meant to nourish children’s imaginations. Throughout
the process, the knitters shared knitting stories and
learned some new techniques.
“Knitting in a group is very rewarding because people
are always at different levels in their knitting skills
and we can learn from each other,” explains Carol. “I
remember one time I was having trouble with the heels
on socks. I just couldn’t get it. But it just took one person
to show me and I understood.”
If you want to make something beautiful and functional,
for yourself or others, if you want to explore your
creativity, if you want to enjoy a social activity, learn and
share, why not get those needles out and start knitting?
There’s a whole other knitting world out there just waiting
for you to join in — and knit one, pearl two.
