The question you might want to ask yourself when you’re
considering a visit to the town of Perth, an hour west of
Ottawa, is how you can possibly get in all the things there are
to do and see in one day. And the answer is that you probably
can’t, so you’ll just have to go back more than once.
Perth is a beautiful little town — and I’m not the only
one with that opinion. Back in 2000 when TV Ontario decided
to hold a contest to find “The Prettiest Town in Ontario,”
Perth won. This is quite an honour, but Perth’s setting on
the Tay River, its beautiful heritage buildings on the main
street and on nearby streets, its green and lovely Stewart
Park, and the effort that goes into landscaping its public
spaces all explain the reason for the award.

MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY FACE

Perth is a town that really takes advantage of its setting
on the water. The river winds through the community in a
couple of places and there are a number of restaurants with
patios either directly overlooking the water or with a view of
it. Mexicali Rosa’s has a verandah that hangs right out over
the water and Maximilian’s, a restaurant that serves
European cuisine and that’s been recommended in Where to
Eat in Canada for 23 years, has a waterfront patio. The restaurant
occupies the entire main floor of a lovely heritage stone
building that was built in 1850.
Another site that takes advantage of the water is the
Crystal Palace Market. Located beside the river with parking
nearby, this all-glass structure houses a number of vendors
