megram - Guide To Spring Fun In Ottawa's East End - Index

In each issue we will feature a special flower for the season.
With the dark days of winter past us, we feature the beloved Crocus.
Crocus
GENUS CROCUS
Crocuses are especially gratifying for gardeners winter-starved colour. Usually
associated with the purple and gold chalices that appear amid the last snowdrifts,
crocus blossoms actually range from substantial to dainty and come in a variety
of tones. Certain crocuses also bloom in the fall.
Plant type: Perennial bulb
Colour range: Yellow, white, lilac, and lavender for early spring
Height range: five to 15 centimetres (two to six inches)
Conditions for growth: Full to partial sun. Because they bloom early,
before trees leaf out, crocuses can thrive when
planted under mature trees and shrubs.
Soil: well-drained garden doll
Fertilizing: fall and sprint with a balanced, granular blend
Watering: At planting and consistently during the growing
season; keep bulbs dry during dormancy.
