Switzerland
Cocoa contains phytochemicals
called flavonoids. The flavonoids in
chocolate — especially dark chocolate
— are antioxidants that protect
the body’s tissue from damage. The
Swiss are best known for their chocolate,
and although chocolate is high
in calories, dark chocolate, with 70
per cent cocoa or higher and cocoa
butter as the main fat source, eaten in
small doses is heart-healthy.
Canada
Newfoundland snow crab is low
in fat and calories, high in protein
and vitamin A, and full of cancerfighting
and immune-boosting selenium.
Lobsters from Nova Scotia have
no saturated fat, contain vitamins A
and B16, iron, zinc, calcium, iodine,
and omega-3 fatty acids — all which
help to reduce heart disease. For
dessert, blueberries rich in antioxidants
help to reverse existing shortterm
memory loss.
The world’s most widely consumed
comfort food, PEI potatoes
are high in fibre, vitamin C, copper,
potassium, and B6, which is used by
the body to build DNA and deal with
stress.
The wild garlic of New Brunswick
contains antibacterial and antiviral
agents to help battle colds, flu, peptic
ulcers, and candida. Eat cooked garlic
two or three times per week and
you’ll also protect your colon from
cancer-causing toxins. To lower your
blood pressure and protect you from
a stroke, try fiddleheads, a traditional
New Brunswick crop that is full of
vitamins A and C, as well as niacin,
riboflavin, magnesium, phosphorus,
and potassium.
Quebec maple syrup is loaded
with minerals with antioxidant properties
and is a good source of zinc,
which synthesizes fatty acids and cholesterol.
Peameal bacon, only from
Ontario, is rich in vitamin B12, iron,
thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin and
low in fat and sodium.
Flaxseed in Manitoba helps to
protect you from bone deterioration
and heart disease.
Soybeans from Saskatchewan
encourage smaller fat cells and slow
the growth of prostate cancer cells.
Alberta venison is packed with
protein, vitamin B12, niacin, and
migraine-moderating riboflavin.
Buffalo has lots of zinc, phosphorus,
and selenium.
British Columbia raspberries contain
vitamin C, manganese, and fibre,
as well as ellagic acid, rending cancercausing
chemicals inactive. Just two
servings per week of salmon can
reduce your risk of stroke and obesity.
Fragrant teas from ingredients
indigenous to Canada’s Far North are
loaded with phytonutrients and
antioxidants.
So get together for a great trip
and know that your time together eating
new cuisines is also healthy — for
your body and for the experiences you
share.
