Drink milk and reduce
periodontal disease
For years we have been told that consuming dairy products can help develop
strong bones and even promote weight loss. Now, researchers have identified yet
another perk of regularly including dairy products as part of a healthy diet. A
study recently published in the Journal of Periodontology showed that a routine
intake of dairy products can lead to a reduction in periodontal, or gum, disease.
The study analysed the periodontal health of 942 subjects and determined that
those who regularly consumed 55 or more grams (1.9 or more ounces) of dairy
products, such as milk, cheese and yogourt, had a lower instance of gum disease.
Choose yogourt
rather than halitosis
Anaerobic bacteria that breed on the back of the tongue produce volatile sulphuric
compounds that can cause halitosis or bad breath. A Japanese study has
found that eating sugarless yogourt, such as Greek-style yogourt that contains
Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus, fights the presence of hydrogen
sulphide and reduces bad breath. After collecting samples from research
participants’ saliva and tongue coatings, researchers found that hydrogen sulphide
levels decreased in 80 per cent of volunteers who had bad breath. Another
sweet reason to choose yogourt as a healthy snack option.
