new position, sharing his advice on
her acquired responsibilities and giving
her the tools she needed to be
successful when speaking on the community’s
behalf.
“Kim has been a driving force
behind our community association
and she has done an excellent job,”
says Bob, a resident of the neighbourhood
for nearly 50 years. “I can’t say
enough about her. She is a very dedicated
person.”
Bringing people together,
whether they are young or old, and
offering them an opportunity to have
fun in a community setting excites
Kim.
She oozes enthusiasm when she
speaks about Eastway Garden’s annual
Fun Day. It is a summertime extravaganza
at Cecil Morrison Park, where
the whole neighbourhood participates.
Using donations, and money
raised during public skating in the
winter, Kim pulls out all the stops
every year to make the day a memorable
one. The police and fire departments,
canine unit and paramedics
all participate. There is always an
almost-free barbeque and a special
“something” that makes each event
unique. In 2007, a massive inflatable
climber was the focal point.
“I organize it and if I need assistance
I ask the neighbours to help
out,” says Kim “and they always do.
Our association has a small board but
lots of volunteers.”
Kim credits the City of Ottawa for
providing funding for both the wading
pool and the skating rink. Having
lifeguards at the pool in the summer
is invaluable, she notes. But she also
knows that in this age of budget constraints
her community needs to be
mindful of its responsibility to wisely
use the resources it has been given.
“We need to use the facilities we
have or we could lose them,” she says
realistically.
During the heated budget debate
of 2004, Kim and Cameron both
spoke before city council members in
an effort to maintain their neighbourhood
resources. Now a Grade 5
student at St. Michael’s, Cameron was
only six years old when he stood
behind a microphone at city hall and
told the councillors why his community
is important to him.
In her role as head of the Eastway
Gardens Community Association, Kim
is a liaison between residents and the
city. However, that is not her only volunteer
responsibility. Kim is also very
involved in her children’s school community.
As chair of the St. Michaels

Catholic School Council, she attends
monthly meetings, fundraises and provides
input to both the school administration
and the board.
“I like to be involved,” says Kim. “I
do what I can do.”
It’s a modest statement from a
woman who contributes more than a
modest amount to her community.
Kim Lamont gives tirelessly and
with an open heart. Her community is
all the better for it.
