Mer Bleue — Rare Nesters of Eastern
Ontario, birding walk on the trails
around Mer Bleue with wildlife photographer
and naturalist Tony Beck.
Look for wetland species and opencountry
birds. Expect the marshes to
ring with the tunes of male songbirds
and furtive wetland creatures. The
unique bog habitat of this special
area will have many birds actively on
territory, including the Lincoln
Sparrow and possibly the Eastern
Palm Warbler. Hope to observe a
flight of Sandhill Cranes, another
rare nester in the east. The nearby
marshes and woodlands will also be
active and worthy of our attention.

The First Signs of Fall Migration —
Ottawa East, birding walk with wildlife
photographer and naturalist Tony
Beck. Petrie Island, along the Ottawa
River, east of the city, has a variety of
habitats accessible to naturalists.
Recent efforts have created a wonderful
public area for recreation and
nature viewing. Many birds, amphibians
and reptiles use its wetlands and
forest. There will likely be much
wildlife in evidence in shallow water
areas, including Pied-billed Grebe,
Common Moorhen or Black Tern.
After exploring this delightful spot,
participants will continue eastward,
visiting key areas along the Ottawa
River, or venture to some of the eastern
lagoons for shorebirds and waterfowl.
There’ll also be a chance to see
the first fall migrants — shorebirds
from northern habitats.

The GLOUCESTER GALLERY presents
Diane Lemire: Tracking, works
that deal with lost memories of
forests. The shoe represents the
tracks of the past and the connection
between man and the environment.
Shoes made of natural and found
objects create both temporary and
permanent sculptures — just like the
objects left behind in the forest — to
remind us that someone at one time
had been there.
