Almost anyone can benefit from an annual flu shot.
Health Canada encourages individuals in high-risk groups
to become vaccinated. Included in this group are:
• adults 65 and over or living in a long-term care home
• adults or children (over six months) with chronic illnesses
such as heart, lung or kidney disorders, cystic
fibrosis, HIV/AIDS, immunological disorders, asthma,
diabetes, severe chronic anaemia, cancer or any other
long-term illness
• individuals who have received an organ transplant
• health care or community service workers or volunteers
• teachers and childcare workers
• family members or those in contact with someone in
a highrisk group.
Some individuals should not receive the influenza
vaccine, including children under six months old and
those with specific allergies. It is best to check with
your doctor to make sure you are eligible for a flu shot.
The flu vaccine is 70 per cent effective and can save
lives. For those who do still “catch” the flu, it often
reduces the severity of the symptoms. Protection from
the vaccine lasts about six months. Flu shots are most
commonly administered in October and early November,
but you can get a shot any time during flu season.
Flu shots do NOT cause flu. If you develop symptoms,
it may be a cold, allergies or a strain of flu for
which the vaccine was not designed.
If you do develop the flu, rest, drink plenty of fluids
and take acetaminophen or ibuprofen for the pain and
fever. (Children and teenagers with influenza should
not take ASA due to its link to the development of
Reye’s Syndrome,a serious condition affecting the brain
and liver.) Furthermore, avoid contact with high-risk
people and make sure you have completely recovered
before receiving a flu shot.
