Changing your ways is hard but healthy
Ruts are usually quite deep. Some
of them are very comforting,
making sure you are still heading
off in the right direction, and they
usually lend a sense of security to a
life. (Or perhaps we convince ourselves
of that sense of security, but
nonetheless it seems to work.) Others
are stultifying and you wake up one
morning wondering if this is all there
is, to paraphrase that Peggy Lee song.
Even an active, interesting life can
qualify for ruthood (that’s my new
word for the month) because the criteria
are just always doing things the
same way. I read a wonderful phrase:
“If you always do what you always did,
you always get what you always got.”
While that may not necessarily be anything
but a good thing in some circumstances,
perhaps every once in a while
patterns can be re-examined.
Whenever I felt somewhat in that
frame of mind I would make sure I
changed the daily pattern of my life. It
isn’t always as easy as it seems.I would
sleep on the opposite side of the bed,
drink tea rather than coffee in the
morning, drive to town via a different
route, and try out new recipes. Rather

silly perhaps — and usually I end up
going back to my usual routine — but
what the changes accomplish is to
bring new awareness to what I do in a
day. Suddenly I see my surroundings
with new eyes and find new points of
interest.As an artist and writer, that is
a good thing as even the things I paint
or what I write can fall into the same
old rutness (another new word).
But sometimes those small
changes just don’t cut it. So then it
becomes time for some drastic action.
The methods depend entirely on the
person. While it is easy to pontificate
