Charity… from page 46
It’s simple.
There’s no real planning involved and no cost to make
the donation.
There’s no obligation to commit future time or
resources to the charity.
You receive a receipt you can use in the current tax
year or carry forward for future use.
The charity gets to use the cash immediately as it sees fit.
But there are disadvantages to donating cash:
You may not be getting the full tax advantage you
would if you gave securities (see below).
The money may not be used in a way that fits with your
original objectives.
If you’re donating smaller amounts, then cash donations
may be the way to go. But for larger amounts, or if you
wish to leave a legacy after death, then I recommend a
more planned approach to help you maximize benefits to
the charity and ensure that you receive the most tax benefits
for yourself or your estate.
Gifts in kind
An increasingly popular option is giving gifts “in
kind.” As a financial advisor, I often see clients donating
securities such as stocks, bonds and other publicly traded
securities, and flow-through shares.
Futures
have always been a good investment.
We can't be there without you.

THE NATURE CONSERVANCY OF CANADA
A natural legacy
future generations can
plant their feet on
Everyone hopes to leave something lasting that will
make a positive difference to future generations.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is helping
Canadians to do that every day. By preserving ecologically
significant areas through outright purchase, donations
and conservation easements, we have secured close to
2 million acres of the best of Canada’s natural areas.
You can support NCC's vital conservation efforts by including
us in your financial planning for the future, such as making
a gift of life insurance or including us in your Will.
