Address concerns directly with the relevant care
provider. Speak calmly and in a timely fashion, providing
details and examples. Prepare notes if you’re easily flustered.
Involve the provider’s supervisor only if the issue
can’t be resolved.
If a situation is causing you distress, compose yourself
before addressing that concern. Otherwise, it’s difficult
to have a constructive discussion.
Depending on the issue and the number of people
involved, you may wish to request a meeting. If you’re
anxious or angry, have a relative or friend present —
preferably someone less emotional — to give support
and help you stay focused.
Whenever possible, suggest solutions to problems.
Be courteous and give others the benefit of the doubt;
expect to be treated likewise.
Keep in mind that you and your loved one’s professional
care providers are partners, even if you don’t
always speak the same language or agree on everything.
Do your best to work with them.
Finally, when you are pleased with the care your
loved one has received, be sure to express appreciation.
