watching spots is the Marsh
Boardwalk. You’ll find open ponds
and cattail marshes as you walk on
the 1.4-kilometre loop. You’ll also
encounter two observation areas
with telescopes and both floating
and stationary boardwalks. Other
worthwhile hiking trails include the
1.2-kilometre loop DeLaurier Trail
with its observation platform and historic
house and the 2.75-kilometre
loop Woodland Nature Trail with its
mature forests and boardwalk wetlands.
Uninhabited Middle Island, 29
kilometres southwest of the mainland
(right next to the U.S. border), is also
a part of Point Pelee National Park.
(It’s actually the most southerly piece
of land in Canada.) The island is home
to many rare and endangered species,
including the cucumber tree and the
Lake Erie water snake. And nearby
Pelee Island is our most southerly
inhabited island (its Heritage Centre
houses an informative exhibit about
Middle Island).
