Freewheeling in the
Deep South of Canada
Point Pelee National Park is as precious as its inhabitants
Point Pelee National Park, located
just south of Leamington’s
“tomato country”, is our country’s
southernmost national park and
it’s home to more endangered plants
and animals than anywhere else in
Canada. It’s also a great place to visit
via two wheels.
The Centennial Bike Trail runs
parallel to the main park road. I was
surprised to find that the sand and
gravel path actually consisted of a
series of rolling hills despite the fact
that the surrounding area is so flat. I
also found the trail to be hard-packed,
and it took me through a jungle-like
forest that covered a very shaded
recreational pathway. The bike trail
was only about four kilometres in
length (one way) from the Marsh
Boardwalk to the Visitor Centre; however,
I continued south on a paved
road for another three kilometres
towards the actual southern tip,which
can ultimately be reached via the Tip
Trail, a short .4-kilometre walking
path. (If I had preferred, a free shuttle
service would have taken me to the
Tip’s hiking trail. It departs from the
Visitor Centre every 20 minutes.)
The southernmost point of
Canada’s mainland is located on a
sandpit that reaches out into Lake
Erie. I encountered thousands of
hungry, flesh-eating flies as I walked
out to this point.I also learned about
