critters slide off. (It’s safe to use, the product is
derived from fish oil, with a scent added. Didn’t
know that, did you?).
The best overall seed is black-oil sunflower.
It appeals to a broad range of species and is rich
in energy. Mixed seed should not contain a high
percentage of cracked corn (although Mourning
Doves love it). Niger seed is usually eaten by
small finches, chickadees and nuthatches. If you
spot lingering Robins,placing pieces of fruit on a
tray will get their attention.
As for dealing with hazards, hanging a CD
outside the window can reduce window impacts
and if you regularly clean off and even wash your
feeders, you will help prevent the spread of birdrelated
diseases.
With all of this in mind, enjoy watching your
neighbourhood friends. It is one of the most
rewarding natural pastimes you can find.
