Friends when it’s Frosty
Bird feeding for over-wintering birds
Before you know it we’ll be knee deep in snow — so
if you haven’t prepared your feeders, now is the
time to start. Feeding birds in winter is one of the
most important things you can do for our avian friends.
Your generosity helps to get them through the lean times
when wild food may not be readily available.
At this time of year there is an adequate supply of natural
foods that over-wintering birds require. Weed seeds
have not yet been depleted, remnant fruit clings to trees
and shrubs and there will still be a good supply of dormant

insects and larvae. Of course, that changes as the season
progresses.When pickings become slim, feeders really pay
dividends for finches, jays, nuthatches, chickadees,
Mourning Doves and especially for lingering species.
Normally feeders would supply about 10 to 15 per cent of
their food needs but during periods of rough weather or
late in the winter, that can climb dramatically.
From the human perspective, our lives are enriched
when we observe not only a variety of species but their
behaviour as well. Casual observers can also contribute to
