Container Gardening
Tried and true! After sharing this idea (from the Lee Valley Gardening Newsletter,Volume 2,Issue 1,February
2007) with you last year , I decided to create it and was delighted with the result. It graced my front step for the
duration of the winter and I have just completed this year’s version!
Fill a container with pre-soaked floral oasis or moistened soil.
Place cedar boughs around the perimeter of the container.
Place a central cluster of red dogwood branches.
Fill the space between the dogwood and cedar with shorter assorted greens such as long-needle pine, bittersweet,
hydrangea blooms, rosehip branches or similar items.
Fill any holes with pinecones.
With below freezing temperatures in our area, the arrangement should only require a bit of tidying up now
and again over the winter months.
Clean and sharpen gardening tools.
Clean out eavestroughs and downspouts.
Bring emptied terracotta pots
indoors to avoid cracking.
Turn off outside taps, drain hoses
and empty rain barrels.
Even if you leave numerous plants
intact over the winter, it is a good
idea to remove the foliage of hostas
before the first hard frost, as their
leaves become a slimy mess and not
pleasant to clean up.
Attend to plants requiring late fall
pruning — and of course prune any
dead branches.
Check trunks and branches of larger
plants that had insect problems.
Overwintering egg masses are easy to
spot when the leaves have fallen and
can be easily rubbed off these plants.
Tilling the garden in the fall is a
great way to eliminate soil pests,
exposing them not only to frost but
also for birds or beneficial insects to
eat — an additional treat for birds in
your neighbourhood!
Put up and fill bird feeders.
