If you have young grandkids, you may have also become aware of how interested they are in plants, nature and the environment. What
an excellent opportunity for us to embrace this interest and pass on our gardening knowledge and techniques
to this eager generation.I have a 16-month-old granddaughter who has a great interest in plants and particularly flowers.
She loves to check out each flower and is thrilled when she smells them and they have a fragrance. Herbs are particularly
fun for her to sniff and watching her response is priceless. Since she was just weeks old, she has been fascinated with
tree leaves as they moved in the breeze or were completely still on the branch. She can see or sense the energy of each leaf
and plant she views. Do not underestimate what you can learn from your grandchildren! They have much to teach us.
I have found two websites that offer some excellent information on getting your grandkids started on the gardening
path:

Winter solstice
Get ready to welcome winter! In
the northern hemisphere, the winter
solstice occurs at 7:04 a.m. EST on
December 21,2008.December 20 and
December 23 solstices occur less frequently
than December 21 or
December 22 solstices in the
Gregorian calendar. The last
December 23 solstice occurred in
1903 and will not occur again until
the year 2303.A December 20 solstice
has occurred very rarely, with the
next one occurring in the year 2080.
There is a noteworthy website,
http://www.religioustolerance.org/
winter_solstice.htm, that has information
associated with numerous
faiths and cultures and how they celebrate
the winter solstice.
Summer successes
I look back in awe of this year’s
gardening season! Plants were abundant
with foliage, flowers and fruit;
we seemed to bypass the August
wilt and instead the lushness of
spring remained with us for an
extended period. Perennials had a
very good start as this past winter’s
record snowfall provided great protection
for them. The memories of
my garden will remain strong as the
winter months settle in and plans
for the 2009 growing season begin
to emerge.
Just a brief reminder of some lastminute
items to take care of as this
year’s gardening comes to an end:
