Located on the south shore of PEI,
Charlottetown is a must-visit destination
on the island. The capital city of the
province, it’s known as the Birthplace of
Confederation. It’s also a cultural centre
that’s chock full of attractions, from museums,
galleries and live theatre, to fine
restaurants, a lively street scene and
numerous historic sites. Explore Province
House National Historic Site, where, in
1864, the first meeting to discuss federal
union was held. As you trot around the historic
district, you may run into some “live”
Fathers and Ladies of Confederation. (An
acting troupe in costume, they’re actually
the Founders’ Hall Confederation Players.)
The Ballad of Stompin’ Tom
A mecca for the visual and performing
arts, Confederation Centre of the Arts is a
Charlottetown gem you don’t want to miss.
As host of the annual Charlottetown
Festival, from June to September it showcases
some of the finest musical theatre
and comedy. This year’s lineup includes
Anne of Green Gables - The Musical™ (marking
the 100 th anniversary of the publication
of the novel) and America Strikes Back!
British Invasion II, featuring hit songs from
the likes of The Four Seasons, The Beatles,
Aretha Franklin, The Beach Boys, Cher and
Tina Turner. The Ballad of Stompin’ Tom honours
the life and music of Stompin’ Tom
Connors and features live performances of
some of his greatest hits, including Bud the
Spud and The Hockey Song.
Get lost and find yourself – at
the edge of the earth
As the tenth and final province to join
Confederation, Newfoundland and Labrador
is a place of extraordinary natural beauty,
wonderful humour, friendly people and distinctive
culture.
A couple of popular traditions – kissing
the cod and downing a shot of screech –
may earn you the title of honorary
Newfoundlander, but, ready or not you’ll be
dazzled by this ruggedly sublime territory.
Go city slicking in the capital city, St.
John’s, or Corner Brook. Take a hike in spec-
tacular Gros Morne National Park. Spend a
few, mesmerizing hours on a whale or iceberg-watching
boat tour. Explore L’anse aux
Meadows, the earliest known European settlement
in the New World. Back in 1960, the
remains of a Norse village were discovered
on this archaeological site on the northern
tip of Newfoundland. The settlement dates
back to about 1000 years ago and onsite
exhibits emphasize the Viking lifestyle, artifacts
and discovery of the site. You can also
hit the hiking trails to bays and lakes in the
vicinity. In northern Labrador, you can have
the adventure of a lifetime at Torngat
