The Alfred Birding Trail features three renowned
sites: the Alfred Bog, the Atocas Bay and the Alfred

Vankleek Hill Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings.
Place des Pionniers in Hawkesbury also features
regional food products and crafts. Pick your
own fruits and vegetables or find a wide variety of

Hungry or thirsty? Stop for a taste of the
famous cheddar and fresh curds at St-Albert
Cheese Factory. For game meat and hearty cuisine,
try The Granary in Hawkesbury or the Sunday
lunch at Mariposa Farm. Entr’Amis in St-Albert
and Le Petit Merlot in Casselman are fine dining
establishments that feature regional food products.
For a light meal, stop in Alfred, which is
known as the French Fry Capital of Ontario or in
Hawkesbury at Le Café Glacé for a gelato or Le
Petit Pain for a delicious fresh pastry. Learn about
brewing techniques and stock up on great organic
beer at Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company in
Vankleek Hill.
For history buffs, several heritage sites are
worth a detour: Keith Boyd Museum in Russell,
Higginson Tower in Vankleek Hill, Place des
Pionniers in Hawkesbury and Mcdonnell-
Williamson House in Pointe-Fortune.The L’Orignal
Old Jail is now open for guided tours. Visit the
alcove-style cells that were witness to inmate’s
secrets and sorrows for almost 175 years.
