Smiths Falls Detached Lock on the west side of town;
the Smiths Falls Combined Locks, a hydraulic lock built
in 1973 to replace three of Colonel By’s locks (and the
largest single chamber lift on the Rideau); and Old Sly’s
Locks,found on the east side of Smiths Falls.There are picnic
facilities alongside the locks and you can watch Parks
Canada employees opening and closing the locks by physical
effort and a pulley system installed in the early 1800s
by Colonel By.
Once called “Chocolate Town Ontario” because of the
Hershey Chocolate Factory (613 283-3300), 1 Hershey
Drive, the Chocolate Shoppe will close at the end of 2008.

43, just east of Smiths Falls, which serves a full breakfast

the home of Ogle Carss, who was an early mayor of Smiths

and has a gourmet food store, which markets hormone-free

with live country music on Saturday afternoon. European

7151), 69 1/2 Lombard Street, specializes in breakfasts and
home-baked menu items for lunch. Darlene’s Café and

baking, including Tait’s famous bread, and offers
homemade soups and light lunches with daily specials,specialty
