gardening to avoid
aches and pains
Use the following guidelines
throughout the gardening season
and you’ll benefit from the fitness
activity while basking in the aromas
of your flowering plants.
• Begin with a warmup that
includes a walk-around, reaching
up to look at buds on trees, swinging
arms from side to side and
squatting to check the soil.
• Start slowly, with no bounce or
sudden movement to your stretches.
Break up a day of gardening
with short rest periods.
• Alternate light and heavy tasks
with varying positions so muscles
are worked but not strained.
• Use proper equipment; sharp
tools need less effort. Long-handled
tools adjusted to your height will
ease the burden on your back, as
will kneeling pads or small stools
instead of squatting.
• When hand weeding or pruning,
frequently stretch out your fingers
and arms.
• To move heavy earth, spread the
task out over time and use smaller
loads to avoid back strain or
fatigue.
• Rehydrate regularly, wear a hat
and sunscreen, gloves, long pants
and sleeves.
• At the end of the day, cool down
with a quiet stroll through your
garden to admire your accomplishments
and when you sit to
rest, use a chair with a supportive
back rest.
You’ve accomplished your gardening
tasks while enjoying the
great outdoors and being physically
active. Enjoy the fruit of your
labours.

The “grapefruit effect” interferes
with some medications
Compounds in grapefruit inhibit the
enzyme in our intestine from metabolizing
some medications. If you are taking
medication for high blood pressure, like
felodipine; statins to reduce cholesterol;
cyclosporine, an immune suppressant; or
coumadin, an anticoagulant, grapefruit
juice should not be consumed.
