Safety First
Most of the Time
Being safe while still being yourself can be a challenge
Ilove getting up at 5 a.m.Always have. It is such a peaceful
time of the day,nobody calls me at that early time and
I keep the radio off. In the summer there is a hint of
dawn, birds are starting their wake up chorus and it gives
me hope for a great day. Winter is a little different; much
darker and I have to wait a little longer for that first light,yet
it is this season that I relish rising early the most.
I always keep a night light on to enable me to creep
my way into the kitchen to feed the cats as well as start
the requisite pot of coffee.All this I can manage without
turning on a light.If there are no lights,my eyes get accustomed
to the dark much easier.
The glow from the embers in my wood stove guides
me,mug of coffee in hand,to my favourite yellow chair.After

topping up the wood, I settle in to watch the flames, meditate
on life, plan the day and do some creating in my mind.
It is where some of my best ideas are born.The cats join me
either on my lap or on their own private stool. Settled in, I
await the dawn so that I can feed the birds.
One particular day was no different from any other —
except, well, I had forgotten about a box of cat toys on my
carpet that lay in the path to the chair.It is amazing just how
quickly an accident can happen. Before I knew it I fell forward,stopping
myself with my left wrist and my right elbow.
Both knees cracked on the marble floor and I gave myself
minor whiplash. But I hardly spilled a drop of my coffee!
Up until then I had never paid much attention to the possibility
