Bridge Background
Bridge is a challenging card game that helps
players develop their analytical skills.
The predecessors of the game are thought to
have come from Asia. Later versions of a trick-taking
game developed from whist were played in the
United Kingdom in the 16th century.
Edmond Hoyle’s Short Treatise, the first book
about whist, was published in 1742;the first game of
duplicate whist was played in London in 1857 and
taken to the colonies by the British.
British civil servants in India in the early 1900s
developed the practice of bidding for the trump
suit. This form of the game became known as auction
bridge.
In 1925, the American multi-millionaire Harold
S.Vanderbilt changed the course of bridge while he
was on a cruise. He suggested that only tricks bid
and made should count toward game, with any extra
tricks counted as bonuses. These revised rules
turned auction bridge into contract bridge.
