should be kept out separately, to be
dealt with by someone who knows
something about the importance of
fit. Put in a giveaway bag those items
you don’t wear and you don’t plan to
have updated.
Make a list of what you feel
would complete your summer
wardrobe and take it with you as you
carefully shop.
Updated summer look
They say it’s the little things that
count and that is certainly true. Once
you are aware of what helps you, it is
so easy to work it.
Now may be the time to try out
that easy-care haircut. Have a good
colourist take a look at your current
colour and see if it is faded and unbecoming. You
won’t need to worry so
much about the colour fading in the
sunlight if you wear a hat, as is suggested
by health authorities, for UV
protection.
Start the summer off with a pedicure.
It’s the season to show off pretty
feet and toe nails.
Are your nails high maintenance,
as mine are? Gels and acrylics professionally
applied at salons work well,
but if you ask for help at a drug store
or a cosmetic counter in a department
store, you will find alternative
ways to look after your own nails and
the cost will be much less. It certainly
helps if you wear gloves when
doing housework and gardening.
If your makeup is current, you
might want to treat yourself to a new
lipstick.There is just something about
a beautiful new lipstick to lift one’s
spirits. Gentlemen, that new light
aftershave is begging to be tried.
Having your clothing organized
and ready to wear will give you a real
feeling of freedom and satisfaction.
You will be prepared for those wonderful
last-minute events that summer
often holds.
Lasting impressions
The combination of looking and
feeling good leaves a lasting impression
on many around us.When I think
back to important people in my life, I
often think of my maternal grandmother.
She had raised a family of 10 and
was widowed while still at a relatively
young age, having married at 19. She
came to the city to work and set about
making a new life for herself. I will
always remember her red nail polish
and rouge (as blush was called in those
days).Lipstick was a must,and always a
rinse for her hair. She managed to look
good on not much money. She was a
very energetic, people-loving person
who lived a long, happy life to age 91,
never having been in a hospital. As part
of my business motto says,“By looks,
and acts, and what you say, your image
is left behind.”
There is no doubt that having a
zest for life leaves an impression on
those you love. I would like my grandchildren,
William, Simon, Georgia and
Morgan, to think of me as a “happening”
Nana.
Whether you spend most of your
summer relaxing in your backyard or
you travel extensively, you will want
to look good. I am fortunate enough
to own a cottage on a lake but even
while secluded there I feel I would be
doing nature a disservice if I did not
try to look my best to match the magnificent
display it is putting on. Too
often, people think that summer is a
time to basically forget about appearance
but when that is the case the

impression you leave on others is not
a good one and unfortunately it is usually
a lasting one.
Something to consider also is the
fact that your spirits are lifted when
you know you have done something
to look good. The effort you invest in
being prepared to look good in summer
will pay dividends for many seasons
to come.

Teresa’s Tips
Even though there are many
clothing trends out there,
remember they will only last
a season or two and may not
even suit you. Shop with this
in mind.
Ladies and gentlemen, if you
are aspiring to look taller do
not wear cuffs on your slacks.
Instead of trying to bathe in
excessive amounts of sunlight
for that great-looking tan, try
some of the over-the-counter
natural glow products that
promote a tan at the same
time they are moisturizing.
If you go to the same destination
repeatedly over the summer
months you might leave
a supply of skin-care products
there and even some clothing,
so as to eliminate the
bother of packing every little
thing needed.
Summer may be a time that
you gain an extra pound.
Don’t worry too much about
it, just try to get some exercise
in every day and plan to
enjoy each day.
