Kurtz Orchards and Country Market (905 468-2937),
16006 Niagara Parkway.During the growing season,visitors
can tour the vast farm estate on a tractor-pulled tram and
then fill a shopping basket with freshly picked fruit —
everything from sweet cherries in July to sunny peaches in
August.
For an authentic taste of times past, also consider Olde
Angel Inn (905 468-3411), 224 Regent Street, the oldest
acting inn in Ontario.A point of pride: its 16 imported draft
beers on tap plus their Angel Inn lager.Watch for resident
ghost “Captain Swayze.”
After lunch, take a zen-inspired break at the outdoor
oasis at Oban Inn (1 866 359-6226), 160 Front Street,
where waterfalls, an infinity lap pool and a lush garden setting
await. It’s the perfect place to unwind after an indulgent
spa treatment.
Cultural options include some of Ontario’s most
acclaimed summer theatre. Taking centre stage is the
Shaw Festival Theatre (1 800 511-7429), 10 Queen’s
Parade, where large-scale classics are hosted. From mysteries
(An Inspector Calls) to musicals (Wonderful
Town) the 2008 season offers something for everyone.
Or, step back in time at the Shaw Festival’s smaller venues
such as the Royal George Theatre, 85 Queen
Street, originally built as a vaudeville house to entertain
troops in WWI or the Court House Theatre, 26 Queen
Street, an 1840s national historic site. Gallery hopping is
also a cultural hobby worth acquiring given the quality
and range showcased by local artists. The Doug
Forsythe Gallery (905 468-3659), 92 Picton Street, celebrates
its 25th anniversary in Niagara in 2008 while one
of Canada’s most beloved artists,Trisha Romance, is featured
at The Romance Collection (905 468-4431), 177
King Street.
Spring/summer events include the Blossom Festival
in May, the Niagara New Vintage Festival and the
Horticultural Society Garden Tour in June, the Cherry
Festival in July and the Peach Festival in August.
Don’t be surprised if, after whetting your appetite on
the above selections, you decide you need more time
to explore. Fortunately, the Niagara-on-the-Lake
Bed and Breakfast Association (1 866 855-0123;
www.bba.notl.on.ca),is there to help. For small inns contact
1 800 340-4667 or check out www.countryinns.org. More
information on Niagara-on-the-Lake is available at the
Chamber of Commerce (905 468-1950),26 Queen Street,
in the Court House building in the Heritage District.
Another option is the Gateway Niagara Welcome Centre
at Exit 74 off the QEW Niagara or visit Tourism Niagara
(1 800 263-2988; www.tourismniagara.com).
