Niagara-on-the-Lake offers a scenic break from a frenzied pace
For lovers of theatre, wine and
period architecture, there are
few places as magical as Niagaraon-the-Lake.
Perched at the edge of
the Niagara Peninsula less than an
hour’s drive from Toronto, its everevolving
appeal makes it a destination
to discover over and over again.
One of the most memorable
Niagara experiences is the spring
spectacle of pink and white blossoms
that blanket the region’s fruit
orchards in early May. Choose to
arrive via Lakeshore Road for the
most dramatic display of peach, plum
and cherry trees in bloom. On breezy
days, the petals billow like confetti
across the rolling fields.
The scenery hasn’t always been as
bucolic. Between 1812 and 1814,
Niagara’s fields were a battleground for
three invasions by U.S. armies. Begin
your exploration into Niagara’s military
heritage with a visit to Fort
George National Historic Site (905
468-6614), 50 Queen’s Parade.
Experience the thrill of a lantern ghost
tour or the drama of battle as re-enactors
portray the British and Loyalist soldiers
and First Nations peoples who
fought over 200 years ago. Enjoy free
admission, fireworks, music, food and
cannon firing during Canada’s birthday
celebrations on July 1st. Check with
the Visitor Information Centre for
details.
From the fort it’s a short walk to
Simcoe Park, a picturesque, green
