DURHAM REGION
Abstracts at Home(s) is a unique display of paintings by
Canada’s Painters Eleven group that runs until September
at the Robert McLaughlin Art Gallery in Oshawa. The first
public appearance of the group took place at the Robert
Simpson department store in Toronto in October 1953.The
concept of an exhibition of abstract art and home furnishings
was the idea of one of the founding members of the
group,William Ronald, a commercial artist working at the
store, and his colleague Carry Cardell. Ronald was prompted
by a panel discussion at the Art Gallery of Toronto on
the subject of why anyone should be expected to buy
Canadian paintings. One of the panellists suggested that
large department stores be encouraged to sell paintings by
novel merchandising methods — and the rest is history.
