Eganville’s businesses inhabit both sides of the river
and the streets that fan out from the centre.Fresh-cut flowers,
silk arrangements and potted plants decorate the store

Augsburg Road. Located in a unique heritage building,
Serendipity on the River (613 628-9559), 291 Bridge
Street, is a bed and breakfast with antique furniture and an
exciting shopping experience with antiques, books, gifts
and art. Tanglewood Honey (613 628-2890), 35548
Highway 41, sells local honey, garlic, beeswax tapers, custom-designed
jewellery, flowers and perennial plants. The
Meadows (613 628-1100; www.meadowsdecor.com), 83
Bonnechere Street,features unique decor items,hand-crafted
jewellery, gourmet food and local artists’ creations.The
Eganville Country Depot (613 628-2272), Highways 41
and 60, in addition to hardware and camping supplies, has
giftware, craft supplies and toys.The Eganville Ultimate
Discount Store (613 628-2227), 200 Queen Street, has an
incredible amount of almost everything, from fishing and
camping supplies to balloons, gifts, dishes and personal
items. Waddles ’n’ Wags Hobby Farm (613 628-5409;
www.waddlesnwags.ca), 78 Marquardt Lane, has a multitude
of animal friends, such as Ernie the Emu, Leah the
Llama, and Baconbits the Pig. Chairs in various sizes, styles
and finishes, foot stools and tables are made at Wilber

The Annual Bonnechere Authors Festival
(613 628-3072, 613 432-5800; www.literacyplus-renfrewcounty.ca)
takes place in several venues where authors can

read their writings on Wednesdays in July. The Annual
Gun Show (613 628-5997) is scheduled for the third
weekend of August at the Eganville Community Arena, 178
Jane Street, and offers hunting, shooting and outdoor supplies,
as well as antiques, collectibles and crafts.
Golden Lake
In the early 1800s, John McLean, one of the Hudson’s
Bay Company’s best traders, raced on snowshoes up the
Bonnechere River to beat the independent traders in making
contact with the Algonquin Indians and to claim the settlement.
Charles Thomas established the outpost for the
Company in 1827.The community was named Golden Lake
in 1873 when the post office was designated to honour an
early settler, John Golden.A hamlet that has changed little
since then, it is quiet in winter but comes alive in summer
when cottagers and tourists flock to the beaches and
invade the gift stores, restaurants and accommodations.
For many years known as the Snowbird Gallery,
HummDinger Gifts (613 625-1962), 11185 Highway 60,
was reborn by the same owners and stocks the same incredibly
unique gifts. Canadian titles, many of the authors from
the region;casual wear for all seasons;artisan jewellery from
Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and Nova Scotia; and a
large selection of hand-crafted items such as candles,
Eggshells!, oil lamps, hand-blown glass, metal signs, pewter
items, pottery, wall decor, First Nations crafts, and more.
A beautiful, old log house is the home for The

“widest selection of books in the Ottawa Valley from the
nearly new to the almost antique” — including lavish gift
books, current bestsellers, and hard-to-find classics.Across
the street at 3296 Lake Dore Road, Cassidy’s Teas and
Coffees (613 625-2992) offers exotic teas such as Bourbon
Street Vanilla and White Swiss Truffle,organic fair-trade coffees,
flavoured coffees such as Muskoka Maple and Carmel
Biscotti,Painted Lady teapots,gift baskets,antiques and art.
A hidden jewel, the ceramics shop of Woodcock
Ceramics (613 625-1143), 3175 Lake Dore Road, sits back
from the road for visitors to discover the fantastic collection
of Christmas items, garden animals, pitchers, basins,
giftware and kitchen items.
Coffees and teas from Cassidy’s, including espresso
and cappuccino, are on the healthy menu at the Village
Café (613 625-2908), 11188 Highway 60, as well as homemade
baking, fish and chips, and deli-style sandwiches.The
Bikini Cups Café (613 625-2999), 144 McNee Drive, at
the Greystone on Golden Lake, offers a light, healthy menu
with fine coffees and teas, ice cream and smoothies.

archery instruction, a trampoline and a playground.
