ral, eco-friendly product that can be
used all year round. It aerates soil,
releases nutrients to plants slowly and
retains water in the soil, while absorbing
and trapping residue from melting
ice.
Let it rain. Conserve water this
season by adding an all-natural soil
conditioner, such as SoilSpong, to garden
beds. This blend of six natural
ingredients releases moisture just as
plants need it, adding up to seven
days between watering. Next, use
soaker hoses instead of sprinklers to
help cut back on water consumption
or consider tapping into a natural
water source with a product like
TerraCycle’s new rain barrel, which
catches rain water for reuse on your
garden and lawn, saving money and
conserving energy in the process.
No bogging down.A peat bog is a
natural, highly specialized eco-system
that removes carbon dioxide from the
air, acts as a cleansing watershed filter
and is home to many important plant
and animal species. Create a modernday
bog with PeatEliminator – a
coconut byproduct that improves
drainage, soil aeration and pH balance
for nutrient uptake.
Retire the old mower. While it is
important to keep your grass at a
height of three inches throughout the
year, small engines found in old lawn
mowers, leaf blowers and weed trimmers
are a significant contributor to
harmful air and noise pollution, smog
and greenhouse gas emissions. This
year, retire your old gas guzzling
mower at any The Home Depot
Canada during Mow Down Pollution
(April 17-27).The mower will be safely
recycled and you’ll receive a gift
card towards the purchase of an ecofriendly
push reel mower, an electric
mower or a rechargeable battery
powered mower.
