Champlain’s footsteps and our own. In July and August, you
can expect excitement to be percolating throughout the
city, with special events and exhibitions to showcase history,
art and more.
Bring your walking shoes, because this is a city and a
celebration that’s made for walking. (The hills and cobbles
mean that comfy footwear will be a better bet than the latest
fashion heels). One of my favourite walks starts at the
Dufferin Terrace beside the Château, taking a path along
the clifftop overlooking the river to Battlefields National
Park, where French and English troops faced each other on
the Plains of Abraham in 1759. For strolling and shopping
in an equally historic precinct, I suggest heading to the
cliff’s base to wander the Quartier Petit-Champlain. From
delicate blown glass to the antiques of rue Saint-Paul, this
area is known for its artisans.
And of course,be prepared to join in the party:Quebec
City is offering some very special events this summer. What
follows is just a sampling of what you can enjoy.
On July 3,4 and 5,2008,“Québec plein la rue”(Quebec
City takes to the streets) will celebrate the city’s founding
as some of the largest international street art troupes come
together to show off the city’s beauty in spectacular per-

formances. Watch for fireworks in the middle of the river
(Pointe-à-Carcy) and an enchanting and mysterious aquatic
show.
From July 3 to 13, 2008, the 400th anniversary edition
of the “Festival d’été de Québec”(Quebec Summer Festival)
will turn the vast urban park of the Plains of Abraham into
an outdoor concert site, headlining Mes Aïeux, Charles
Aznavour, Lynda Lemay, Fergie, Yes and Linkin Park. As it
does every year, the summer festival will also feature talented
Quebec artists and musical styles from around the
world.
Until July 29, 2008, Quebec City’s old port will set the
stage for an outdoor show featuring the world’s largest
architectural projection.The “Moulin à images”(Image Mill)
from artist Robert Lepage is a 10-storey high historic fresco
that will be projected onto the grain silos in Bassin Louise,
accompanied by a special soundtrack.
From August 13 to 17, 2008, nearly 2,000 costumed
performers will bring history to life on the Plains of
Abraham in Plaines lunes, The Plains of Abraham Epic.
Presented in celebration of the National Battlefield
Commission’s 100th anniversary, Epic will tell the story of
the site’s 400-year history, from the arrival of the first
