Tara Marsh, Carol Nesbitt, Doug Scott, Julia Hillyer, Andrea
Ripley and Jennifer Tarrant. The price range of the glass
pieces varies as much as the styles:some are beautiful practical
items such as bowls, drinking glasses and Champaign
flutes and others are whimsical, ornate pieces, brightly
coloured and even adorned with tiny glass birds. Artist
Andrew Kuntz, for instance, moves beyond the simply
ornate and creates custom lighting and glass sinks for oneof-a-kind
designer bathrooms.
But Glen Williams isn’t just about artists. If you prefer
your collectables old rather than newly minted, the
Beaumont Mill (905 873-4407), 586 Main Street, can help
you out.The historic stone building (circa 1875) houses 20
dealers of used and collectable merchandise.A bit more flea
market than antique chic, this building is jammed with glass,
china, tools, books, jewellery and various oddities that might
evoke memories of your grandmother’s kitchen. It’s open
Wednesday to Sunday (and all holidays) from 9 a.m.to 6 p.m.
The Beaumont Mill is about a 10-minute walk, across
two small bridges, from the Williams Mill studios. As you
head over there, you’ll pass a few other places that will
entice a stop.The Copper Kettle Pub (905 877-5551),517
Main Street, offers classic English fare — the closest to
authentic you’ll find outside of Manchester. Wood floors

echo with the sound of your boot heels when you walk in
to take a seat at any of the casual tables.Antiques line the
walls. There’s a fireplace and an upright piano that gets
good use each Tuesday night when the pub hosts jam-session
nights. Daily sandwich specials, along with the classics
like fish and chips or bangers and mash, will have you
singing God Save the Queen — or maybe that’s any of the
imported beers on tap, such as Kilkenny or Strong Bow.
This red brick building served as the general store and post
office until 1971, and an interesting fact: The Glen Town
Hall right next door once served as a community and temperance
hall.
If sandwiches on homemade multi-grain bread, sweets
and coffee are more your style, the family-owned Glen
Oven Bakery (905 873-0940; www.glenoven.com), 520
Main Street, has that covered. Here you can get a light lunch
to eat in or take out. The fresh baked goods have made
many a “best of” list in the region. Recommended are the
Rocky Road bars, if you’re a marshmallow fan. But if you
prefer your brownies the old-fashioned way — with nuts
— go for the bakery’s version of this chocolate classic. The
Glen Oven Bakery is open Wednesday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to
5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
