Dishing It Up
By Gay Cook
Schnitzels, Spaetzle
and Spinach Salad
The Granary Schnitzel House Restaurant’s
signature dishes keep them coming back
Hats off to Alexis and Paul Letourneau. This young
couple bought The Granary Schnitzel House
Restaurant in Eganville in 2004 when they were
fresh out of college and university and have continued to
make it a super success.
The Granary is a popular stop over on the way to camp
in Algonquin Park or when taking part in an exciting whitewater
rafting excursion.
“We offer great food and quick service with a smile to
help people get back on the road with their travels,” says
Alexis.
The Granary building is located at the corner of
Bruce and Bonnechere Street and looks out over the
Bonnechere River that runs through Eganville on to
Renfrew. The original building was built in 1889 as a
porcelain store with the upstairs as a residence. Then it
changed over the years with many businesses — including
a general store and a bakery. The building is a real eyecatcher
— it was renovated in 1985 to take on the appearance
of a large, old-fashioned granary.
As you may expect, schnitzels are the signature dish of
The Granary Schnitzel House Restaurant. The menu offers
10 different ways of preparing and serving the schnitzels.
In case you are not familiar with a schnitzel, it’s a German
word meaning cutlet — which is a thin slice of veal, pork

or chicken — that is dipped in egg, then breaded and fried
until golden. Parmesan Schnitzel topped with mozzarella
and served on a bed of linguini and tomato sauce is a winner
as well the Wiener Schnitzel on Spinach Salad. (The
Letourneaus were happy to give the recipe that is printed
on the next page.)
Also offered in the restaurant is a healthy triple-decker
sandwich with ham, cheese, bacon and tomatoes or a
“knackige” (Oktoberfest Bratwurst), which is grilled and
served with sauerkraut and German mustard. A grilled Tbone
or strip loin steaks are often in demand. Many people
love to order spaetzle, the house-made small irregularshaped
noodles to be included in their meal.
The restaurant hours are Monday to Thursday from 11
a.m.to 9 p.m.,Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m.to 10 p.m.
and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The address is 57
Bonnechere Street, Eganville, Ontario, K0J 1T0.The website
