Artifacts in the Woodland Cultural
Centre’s museum depicting media
images of Native People throughout
the 20th century.
Mohawk Chapel and the Woodland
Cultural Centre.
Her Majesty’s Royal Chapel of
the Mohawks (519 756-0240;
www.mohawkchapel.ca) 301 Mohawk
Street,Brantford,is the oldest surviving
church in Ontario. Built in 1785, it was
the first Protestant church in Upper
Canada and to this day is the only
Royal Chapel in North America. It’s
also a visible reminder of the loyalty
many of the Grand River People had
for the British crown at that time.
Today, a well-informed guide tells visitors
the story of the chapel, its significance
to the area and the history recreated
in the stained-glass windows
installed in the mid-20th century.
Outside is the tomb of Captain Joseph
Brant, whose remains were moved
there in 1850. His son, John Brant, also
rests beside a tribute to Pauline
Johnson, who attended services at
the church.

184 Mohawk Street,
Brantford, is located at the site of the
area’s residential school, which closed
in 1970.The administration offices and
library (open to the public, but not a
lending library) are housed in the former
school.
The museum and art gallery is in a
separate dark wood building on-site.
This museum serves a dual purpose:
one side contains gallery spaces featuring
changing exhibitions of Native
contemporary art and the other side
features a journey through time beginning
with the early Neutral-Iroquoian
origins to the first contact with
Europeans and into the 21st century.
Representative mannequins, paintings,
and artifacts document each moment
in history and offer visitors food for
thought about the changing social climate
around us.
