Mohawks in Brantford is one of the
oldest surviving churches in Ontario.
1913) one of the country’s first
female poets. Her most famous collection
of verse,Flint and Feather,is still
one of the bestselling books of
Canadian poetry. Johnson was the
fourth child of Chief G.H.M. Johnson,
a Six Nations leader, and English-born
Emily H. Howells. The poet traveled
through Canada and Europe during
the late 1800s giving dramatic recitals
of her work and introducing many
people to Native culture, life and
issues.
The building is in an ongoing
state of restoration, but it is advertised
as open to the public May to October,
Tuesday to Sunday. However, call
ahead if you want a tour because the
actual hours of operation may vary.
Outside the understated whitewash
building is a tall grass prairie meadow
garden composed of native plants and
wildflowers that would have filled the
landscape during Johnson’s lifetime.
One of the best places to buy
works by E. Pauline Johnson is
Iroqrafts (519 445-0414), 1880
Tuscarora Road. Drive down
Chiefswood Road into Ohsweken and
try to overlook the numerous roadside
smoke shops. (Native people with status
cards are exempt from paying
taxes on cigarettes and gasoline, so
both are big business in this area.
Without a card, you’ll pay full price,
including at the pumps, so check the
signs when you pull up at gas stations.)
Follow the signs along the side
of the road directing you to various
businesses and you’ll discover some
interesting artists’ studios and gift
shops.
Iroqrafts, for instance,is the largest
and oldest store of its kind, first opening
in 1959. Inside the large wooden
building marked only by a script sign
on the front are shelves and shelves of
Native-made jewellery, rattles, moccasins,
beadwork art, corn-husk dolls,
carvings, crafts supplies and rows of
books about Native history, culture
and literature. Johnson is well represented
on these shelves and some of
the books are published by Iroqrafts.

Items are made by Native people from
all over North America. (This is one
gift store that doesn’t have “Made in
China” stamped on every item). This
location also boasts being the originator
of Iroquois stone carving, an art
technique similar to soapstone sculpture
but more durable and detailed.
Mail order catalogues are available.
A little harder to find (but well
worth it) is Talking Earth Pottery
(519 445-2814) on Second Line
between Seneca and Mohawk Road.
This is the home and working
studio/gallery of Steve Smith, who has
been creating elaborately carved
colourful vases covered in narrative
designs since the mid-1980s. Each
gallery quality piece takes days to create.
Steve uses a technique that
involves coating each vase with four
to six layers of colour, for every colour
used, and then carving away the clay
in intricate figurative patterns to
reveal the colours underneath. Each
piece is unique though he does repeat
