A train trip from Glasgow to Fort
William takes you through the scenic
Western Highland countryside to
experience charming pastoral villages,
inland lochs, and treed mountains
with rocky peaks and lush,green fields
dotted with grazing sheep and highland
cattle.
Fort William, a beauty of a spot, is
situated on the northeast shores of
Loch Linnhe at the base of Ben Nevis,
Britain’s highest mountain. Among its
numerous splendid B&Bs,many have a
view of the loch — including the hospitable
Ashburn B&B where tea and
traditional shortbread are served upon
your arrival.
Fort William has an excellent bus
service, providing access to its many
sites and activities. Choose from the
many pathways either a leisurely walk
and or a more challenging hike.There
is good shopping right in Fort William
and cruises on Loch Linnhe. At Nevis
Range you can embark on an exciting
gondola ride up Aonach Mor to breathtaking
views of the Highlands, the
Great Glen and Ben Nevis.
The nearby village of Glencoe was
made famous by the Glencoe

Massacre when, in 1692, the resident
MacDonalds were murdered by
Campbell soldiers. Just outside of
Glencoe, several forest paths take you
around Glencoe Lochan, a small lake
that looks suspiciously Canadian —
and for good reason. In the late 19thcentury
a Canadian, Donald Smith
(Lord Strathcona), lovingly planted
this forest with trees indigenous to the
Canadian Pacific Northwest. After
Smith and his wife, Isabella, had
moved to Scotland from Canada,
Isabella became increasingly homesick
for the forests of Canada; Smith
planted the forest so she’d feel at
home.
