Panama
Panama:
One of the best places
in the world to retire
September 2008 • 64 • Fifty-Five Plus Magazine
You’ve put in your 30 years at the nine to five grind.
Now it’s time to say, “So long, workforce. Hello,
retirement.”
From now on, your time is truly yours. Do you really
want to spend the next 30 years shoveling snow and
spreading salt over your ice-covered front step so you
won’t break a hip when you walk out the door?
Heck no.
The tropics beckon. Why not flee Old Man Winter
and head for Panama, where you can enjoy a lifestyle
in paradise – at the right price?
Officially called the Republic of Panama, this
Central American country of about three million is perhaps
the best kept secret on the continent. It’s tucked
in between Columbia and Costa Rica and bordered by
the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. An isthmus,
it connects North and South America.
The government is a constitutional democracy
and the country is divided into nine provinces. Most
often associated with the Panama Canal, the legendary
man-made waterway between the Atlantic and
Pacific Oceans, the Republic of Panama has other
claims to fame.
