get the facts.
For starters, get the facts.
OHIP coverage – comforting as
it is when you’re in Eastern Ontario
– isn’t going to do you a whole lot of
good while you’re in New
Hampshire, Cuba or on a
Mediterranean cruise.
When you purchase travel
health insurance, it doesn’t automatically
mean you’re covered if you
cancel your trip at the last minute or
your priceless possessions disappear
while in baggage.
Don’t assume that, because you
have a certain credit card or you’re
part of a group insurance plan that
has some travel insurance provisions,
you’re automatically in the
worry-free zone.
It’s up to you to sweat the
details and to ensure that, no matter
what, you’ve got the bases covered.
That means asking questions,
reading the fine print and getting
the details.
You also have to weigh your
options:
Are there health, family, work or
personal concerns that might possibly
necessitate cancelling or
rescheduling your trip? If you’re in
any doubt whatsoever, cancellation
insurance is in order.
How about lost baggage insurance?
Do you really want to spend
two weeks in Rome wearing those
ugly sweats you donned for comfort
on the plane? How comfortable will
you be when you land in Japan and
all your favourite stuff and personal
items are circling the baggage
carousel in Jakarta? Are you willing
to risk it?
Do you have a pre-existing
health condition? It’s possible you
may be denied coverage, should a
health emergency arise,
Before you go anywhere or buy
any travel insurance, prepare a list
Travel Insurance
of questions to ask the insurance
provider.
What’s not covered?
What limitations or restrictions
does the policy in question have?
How do you make a claim? Who
and where do you call?
Do you have to pay for help
up front and wait for reimbursement
later? What are the rules?
Do you have to ask for receipts for
everything? Whose responsibility
is that?
If you decide to stay at your
vacation destination longer, can you
get your coverage extended?
Are their exclusions based on
age or health or activities you
choose?
Find out.
And shop around for health
insurance. Be forthright about
your health status and age and get
the best plan for your circumstances.
It’s worth it for truly
carefree travel.
