Travel Insurance
You’ve probably heard the stories. Or
maybe you actually know somebody
who’s survived to tell the tale. The
scenarios go something like this:
A couple is on a once-in-alifestyle
international holiday to celebrate
a 35th anniversary. The
weather is gorgeous. The scenery is
amazing. The service is sublime.
They’re at the picturesque sixth hole
of a championship, seaside golf
course when he swings – and keels
over. Heart attack. A big one. The
ambulance is quick and, although
the trip to the hospital is hair-raising,
eventually the news is good.
He’s going to make it. They do all
the tests, he spends several days
closely monitored in ICU and the
heart specialists are clearly on top of
the situation. It would do this couple’s
hearts good to know such
expert health care is at hand – if
only they were at home, where
health care is covered by OHIP.
Too bad they didn’t adequately
protect themselves with travel insurance
for this trip. It’s going to cost
them for years to come.
Another, all-too-frequent story
often unfolds this way. Some friends
or neighbours or relatives decide to
go across the border for a day or two
or three. They want to go shopping
or to one of the numerous popular
destinations and attractions that are
a relatively short distance from
home. Maybe they decide to just go
over for the day. It’s no big deal,
right? Nobody even thinks about getting
travel insurance. Why bother?
It’s only for a few hours or a couple
of days.
Who has time to worry about
that stuff? Besides, wouldn’t the
money be better spent on a new pair
of shoes?
