YORK REGION
More than 150 craft booths, a wide variety of food vendors
and a multitude of community group displays await visitors to
the 32nd Annual Thornhill Village Festival from 9 a.m. to
4:30 p.m. on September 20. This community within the
boundaries of the Town of Markham is pulling out all the
stops with this event, featuring a Festival Parade, a juried art
show,a canine Olympics and amusement rides for youngsters
of all ages. There will also be battle re-enactments by the
King’s Royal Yorkers and a Legends Show featuring impersonators
paying homage to such artists as Elvis, Cher and Gwen
Stefani. Admission is $4 for adults and $3 for seniors. More

DURHAM REGION
The Harvest Festival on September 13 in downtown
Brooklin, north of Whitby, has all the trappings of an oldfashioned
fall celebration.The Harvest Marketplace sets the
scene with an array of fruits and vegetables, flowers and
plants.There are crafts and games for the youngsters as well
as a horse and wagon ride and a pie-eating contest.
Activities get underway at 10 a.m. and last until 3:30 p.m.
Come out and cheer the Brooklin Mini Idol contestants and
join in the annual Harvest Walk/Run. Further details on this

The 143rd annual Uxbridge Fall Fair has enough activities
to please all comers, with tractor pulls, stilt walkers, a
barnyard rodeo, sheep shearing, goat milking, a doll and
teddy bear contest, ugliest bug contest and a demolition
derby.There are a number of other activities typical of a fall
fair as well as for-sale items such as baking and other homemade
foodstuffs.The event kicks off at 5 p.m.on September
7, with all-day events scheduled for September 8 and 9.

Visit the hidden treasures of gardens in and around
Bowmanville during the Fall Garden Glory Tour
September 13 sponsored by the Bowmanville Horticultural
Society. The $20 admission fee includes a box lunch, souvenir

learned his espionage techniques. It all happens during a
free Camp-X Walking Tour at Oshawa’s Intrepid Park
starting at 1 p.m. on September 21. Camp-X is where many
Allied spies trained during World War Two. (The place was
so top secret that only those residents of the area who
worked there were even aware that the place existed.)

Community Events
ACROSS THE GREATER TORONTO AREA
Residents of communities large and small will honour the
memory of heroic runner Terry Fox on September 14 by
running, walking, rollerblading, bicycling or operating
wheelchairs to commemorate Terry’s Marathon of Hope.
Each year, thousands of volunteers organize Terry Fox Run
events in Canada and around the world. The first such
event in 1981 attracted 300,000 participants across Canada
and raised $3.5 million.To date,more than $400 million has
been collected worldwide for cancer research in Terry’s
name. There is no entry fee and no prizes are awarded,
although a certificate of appreciation is given when participants
complete their journey. For detailed information on
