1957
The Soviet Union launches Sputnik I, the first artificial satellite to be sent
into outer space.
The start of the Sputnik program also marks the beginning of the race for
the control of space and the start of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and
the United States of America.
Canada sees the advent of Medicare with parliament’s approval of the
Hospital Insurance and Diagnostic Services Act.
Ellen Fairclough, an M.P. since 1950, becomes Canada’s first female cabinet
minister.
The Beatles form the musical group that will be one of the most successful
in pop music history.
1965
Canada raises its own flag for the first time.Until February 15,1965,Canada
flew the Red Ensign. Since then, it has flown the red-and-white maple leaf flag
as its national symbol.
1966
The Canada Pension Plan comes into effect.
1967
Canada celebrates the 100th anniversary of Confederation.
1969
The Woodstock Music and Art Fair, held on a 600-acre dairy farm in Bethel,
New York, exemplifies the hippie counterculture of the late 1960s and early
1970s.
Man walks on the moon.Astronaut Neil Armstrong takes “one small step for
man, one giant leap for mankind.”
1970
Canada weathers the October Crisis in which the Front de Libération du
Québec kidnapped British trade commissioner James Cross and Quebec politician
Pierre Laporte. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau implements the War
Measures Act. James Cross is rescued.The FLQ murders Pierre Laporte.
1960s and 1970s
The women’s liberation movement demanding social justice and equality
takes hold throughout the western world.
1980
The federal government introduces the National Energy Program. (This
marked the beginning of a prolonged feud between Alberta and the Liberal government
of Pierre Trudeau and led indirectly to the founding of the Reform
Party seven years later.)
