Defining moments through the era
1945
The Second World War ends.
1946 to 1955
Following the victory of the Allies and the surrender of Germany, soldiers
return home. Accompanying the sense of optimism and confidence in the
future is the realization that the world will never be the same again.
What is to be done with the jobless soldiers streaming home? Will the
women get out of the factories where they have worked through the war and
go back to the hearth? How will the great surge of immigrants (including the
many war brides) arriving in Canada change the country?
Through this period, Canada’s social safety net begins to take shape. This is
the beginning of modern Canada, a time that is frequently seen as the country’s
golden age.
1956
Elvis Presley, the undisputed king of Rock and Roll, hits the big time.
