Welland E xplore Ontario
Officially known as the Rose City, Welland is blooming
with special events and activities to celebrate its 150th
anniversary this year. An historic canal community, situated
in the heart of the Niagara Peninsula, this lovely
locale is home to over 350 acres of parks, one of the
country’s finest rose gardens and Merritt Island, an outdoor
paradise nestled along the waterway. Visit the
Welland Historical Museum or the historic Welland
Courthouse, built in 1855. Tour 24 outdoor heritage
murals and enjoy the coming fun:
The Welland Rose Festival, June 2 to June 21, features
everything from a Coronation Ball to concerts and
a parade. A dragon boat festival, jazz and blues concerts
and the Niagara Food Festival October 3-5 are on
the summer schedule, along with the 150th Anniversary
Weekend July 24 to 27. It includes an outdoor photographic
display, an antique car show, fireworks and the
ever-popular IlluminAqua. The only event of its kind in
Canada, it’s a spectacular blend of music, fire and water
along the Welland Recreational Waterway – a beautiful
water park that runs through the city. Discover Welland
– a short trip away, but a world apart.
